How to Make Swedish Glögg Mulled Wine For Christmas

Ready for a serious dose of Swedish cozy? To bring your home to “mys” level 10 by making this glögg — aka Nordic spiced wine — whip up this simple recipe.

The key to this being distinct from mulled wine from, say, Germany or Italy is the use of cardamom, which the Swedes love in pastries like cardamom buns and spiced cakes consumed during fika (check out our videos of this tradition here). In fact, Sweden is the top importer of the spice worldwide!

Here’s how to make Swedish glögg at home.

Ingredients

1 bottle dry red wine (Go for something affordable in varieties like Tempranillo, Spatburgunder, or Cab Franc)

2.5 oz Brandy

2 Cinnamon Sticks

1 Whole Star Anise

2 tbsp Cardamom

2 Whole Cloves

2 Tbsp Honey

1 Orange, Zested

Method

Combine all ingredients in a medium sized saucepan.

Bring to a simmer, then lower heat and let warm for approximately 10 minutes.

Strain through a fine mesh strainer into a serving vessel, then enjoy!
